The Sonata-Fantasy for cello solo in C major, written in 1974, is one of several works for solo instruments dating from Khachaturian’s last years. In this work, Khachaturian plays with intervallic elements in melody to generate a sonata-like structure. In this way he is able to experiment with a variety of moods. Sometimes this melodic material tends toward a texture reminiscent of deeply felt religious chant. To the contrary, he also experimented with the folk rhythms of his native Armenia in much more virtuosic sections. The work lasts about 13 minutes in performance.
