PROKOFIEV – Sonata, Op.133/134 (in one movement) – SOLO CELLO

Other Identification:
This sonata was meant to be a four movements work, but Prokofiev died after writing up to the middle of development section of first movement. While the first subject of the exposition of the Andante was written entirely by Prokofiev, the second subject was partially written by his friend, the cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. Prokofiev’s writing resumes at the beginning of the development section of the Andante. It was finally completed by another composer Vladimir Blok, in 1972, as a single, performable movement.
There remain two inconsistencies; the sonata is often catalogued as “Sonata for Solo Cello in C-sharp minor” but Blok’s reconstruction of the sonata is clearly based in the key of F-sharp minor. Also, it is unsure whether this work would have become Op.133 or Op.134 – it was one of seven different compositions which the composer was working at this time!
