REGER – 3 Suites, Op.131c (1915) – SOLO CELLO

Other Identification:
These works marked a new beginning, along with the Kodaly Solo Sonata – in cello writing after a near 200-year gap from the Suites of Johann Sebastian Bach (composed in about 1720). The three Suites of Reger are much performed today in central Europe, perhaps less so in other parts of the world. It is possible to find these works in the public domain on internet but here they are collected up together as a complete volume – Enjoy the music !!

Movements or sections:
3 Suites
I –G Major (Präludium / Adagio / Fugue)
II –D minor (Präludium / Gavotte / Largo / Gigue)
III –A minor (Präludium /Scherzo / Andante con variazione)
Instrumentation:
Solo Violoncello.
Approximate difficulty:
Difficult.
In very general terms, the first Suite could be described as robust, open, and brilliant.
The second Suite is both reflective and playful by turns, even looking ahead to Prokofiev in parts.
The final Suite is altogether darker, more complicated, and the final great set of variations is true late-Reger and not related at all to J.S. Bach.
Dedicatee of this presentation (if applicable):
The Three Suites for Cello solo were composed for three important cellists and teachers of the time: Julius Klengel, Hugo Becker and Paul Grümmer.
Reger rather humorously later told Julius Klengel of his Opus 131c, calling them “strapping triplets”. He asked the cellist to “use these three things as often as possible in your lessons”, although they presuppose a big effort by students and professionals alike.
