JOHNSTONE – Tango World No.1B – Big Little Tango – 3 CELLOS

Tango World is a series of 6 pieces in tango style, or with certain tango influence, prepared by David Johnstone, and dedicated to Ricaldo Alba Lago. Some of the pieces use tango melodic cells or fragments already composed by others but uniquely adapted to cellos, whilst others are totally original inventions of David Johnstone from the outset.
Each piece might be played by three solo cellists, or by a small ensemble or by a large orchestra of cellists – Johnstone is fully convinced that any number of cellists (from 3 to 100!) could present this music in equally convincing fashion.
The first of this set is called ‘Little Tango’. It has been played quite frequently. However, it is quite short and it was always in my head to make a longer version so as to be more in character with the other 5 pieces. This ‘BIG LITTLE TANGO’, if possible, should be played instead of the previous version!

Personal

David Johnstone lives near Pamplona (Navarre, Spain) with his wife Rosa and their two “Spanglish” children, close to the Atlantic Pyrenees. The nearest international airport is Bilbao.

He is interested in world affairs, politics, animal rights, and most sports (including being a lifelong suffering Reading FC fan!). Also passionate about Celtic culture and genealogy, he has traced his ‘English’ family back to 1280, although Scotland and Ireland have also shaped his background. And yes — he is half-ashamed to admit it, he loves silly jokes!

Social Work

David Johnstone supports animal rights, he is against any form of abuse towards them, and says a loud “NO” to bullfighting, foxhunting and any other animal cruelty.
