SIBELIUS – Rondini, Op.81 No.2 – CELLO AND PIANO

Other Identification:
Jean Sibelius’s Op. 81 consists of Five Pieces for Violin and Piano, composed between 1915 and 1918, a period when he also worked on his symphonies. These violin pieces, in the styles of a Mazurka, Rondino, Valse, Aubade, and Menuetto, were written during World War I and provided a source of income for the composer. The pieces are considered recital-ready, enjoyable, and technically demanding, with the Mazurka featuring virtuoso elements.
Sibelius’s “Rondino” is the second movement of his Five Pieces for Violin and Piano, as said as a practical measure during a period of leaner finances for the composer. This short, recital-ready piece is written in a “quasi-Rococo” style, offering a contrast to the other movements in the set and is considered an interesting intermediate-advanced level piece.
