TCHAIKOVSKY – Allegretto from the 6th Symphony [arr. Van Lier] – CELLO AND PIANO

Other Identification:
The second movement of Tchaikovsky’s 6th Symphony is characterized by its unusual 5/4 time signature. It is worth noting that this is probably the first time this time signature was used in a symphony (while in opera it had already been used, for example, by François-Adrien Boieldieu in an aria from La Dame blanche). Tchaikovsky adopts the 2+3 regrouping of the beats in the bar, which gives the impression of a waltz. From a formal point of view, the movement has the ABA structure of a scherzo, to which Tchaikovsky adds a coda based on both parts of the composition. Some have described this movement as “a smile amidst tears.”
