ALBINONI-GIAZOTTO – Adagio – FOUR CELLOS

Other Identification:
The music known as “Albinoni’s Adagio” is actually a 20th-century neo-Baroque composition by Italian musicologist Remo Giazotto, not the Baroque composer Tomaso Albinoni. Giazotto claimed to have based the work on a fragment of a melody by Albinoni that he discovered, but most scholars agree Giazotto wrote the entire piece himself, using only the discovered bass line and Giazotto’s own compositional talent.
Movements or sections:
Giazotto stated the work was based on a fragment of a slow movement from an Albinoni Trio Sonata, which he found after WWII. It has become a very popular and beautiful piece, often featured in films and used by audiences worldwide. The piece is still widely attributed to Albinoni but is obviously considered a hoax or misattribution by most music critics.
