BACH, C.P.E. – Solfeggietto (Virtuoso Concert Miniature) – SOLO CELLO

Other Identification: Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach composed his Solfeggietto in 1766 (and was first published in1770). It is a short solo keyboard piece in the key of C minor, with versions for both standard keyboard and organ. The work is actually called Solfeggio, although it is usually referred to as ‘Solfeggietto’ (a diminutive). The title, referring to the solfège exercises commonly given to singers, indicates a piece that is designed to develop technique. But the panache with which Bach flies through the scales and arpeggios of this piece make it both a satisfying and highly-effective practice piece as well as a reliable concert showstopper!
Movements or sections: One short movement marked ‘Prestissimo’ 1 PDF
Instrumentation: VIOLONCELLO SOLO. Original for keyboard.
Approximate difficulty: Very difficult – virtuoso
Dedicatee of this presentation (if applicable): In this cello presentation (set probably for the first time ever!) David Johnstone takes certain liberty with the original registers so as to set the splendour of the cello resonances; even so, it is highly virtuosic for cellists. For this reason, the arranger held in mind the absolutely wonderful cello ability of SANTIAGO CAÑON-VALENCIA, to whom this piece is dedicated!
