BACH – Chorale ‘Nun Dankett Alle Gott’ (from Cantata No.79), BWV 79 – STRING QUARTET

Other Identification:
Bach’s “Nun danket alle Gott” is the third movement of his cantata “Gott, der Herr, ist Sonn und Schild” (God the Lord is sun and shield), BWV 79, which he composed in 1725 for Reformation Day. The cantata is for SATB choir and soloists, orchestra, and continuo, and is based on the hymn “Now Thank We All Our God” by Martin Rinckart. The famous chorale movement is notable for its use of two horns playing interludes that incorporate motifs from the opening movement.
Movements or sections:
The “Nun danket alle Gott” movement is a simple, chordal setting of Martin Rinckart’s hymn. Bach later used some of the music from this cantata, including the chorus and arias, in his “Lutheran Masses”.
