BACH, W.F. – Fugue in D Minor – 3 CELLOS

Other Identification:
Wilhelm Friedemann Bach (1710-1784) was the eldest of Bach’s children, born from his first marriage to Maria Barbara. He was considered a virtuoso of the organ, and his father dedicated works such as the Orgelbüchlein, the Inventions and Symphonies, the Little Preludes BWV 924-931, and part of the Well-Tempered Clavier to him. He worked for eighteen years as organist at the Liebfrauenkirche in Halle.
Unfortunately, of Bach’s children, Friedemann is the least known, and it is likely that due to his own neglect, much of his music has been lost; he was a rather undisciplined musician with a reputation for laziness. He died in poverty and oblivion, which did not help his cause.
However, along with Carl Philipp Emanuel, Friedemann represents the then modern so-called ‘empfindsamer Stil’ (literally, sensitive style). Although some of his works pay homage to his father’s conservative nature, others – such as this Fugue – look forward towards Mozart.
