“Beethoven’s Die Ehre Gottes” refers to the fourth song in his Sechs Lieder nach Gellert, Op. 48, a cycle of lieder (German art songs). The original poem, “Die Ehre Gottes aus der Natur” (The Glory of God in Nature), was written by Christian Fürchtegott Gellert and is a paraphrase of Psalm 19, celebrating the Creator’s magnificence through nature. Beethoven’s setting, typically titled “Die Himmel rühmen” (“The Heavens are Telling”) after its opening words, is for voice and piano.
