“Ode to Joy” is the final movement of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, a choral work based on Friedrich Schiller’s 1785 poem ‘An die Freude’. Beethoven set Schiller’s poem to music, completing the Ninth Symphony in 1824. He was inspired by the poem’s message of human unity and freedom.
