“March to the Scaffold” is the fourth movement of Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, a programmatic work depicting an artist’s opium-induced nightmare following the murder of his beloved, represented by the idée fixe melody. This movement portrays the artist’s forced march to his execution, complete with a somber march that becomes fierce and chaotic, culminating in a brief, poignant appearance of the idée fixe before the sudden, dramatic strike of the guillotine and a final series of pizzicato notes symbolizing his falling head.
