BORODIN – Andantino (from the Polovtsian Dances of ‘Prince Igor’) – FOUR CELLOS

Other Identification:
The Andantino is the opening “Gliding Dance of the Maidens” within the larger Polovtsian Dances, a famous section from Alexander Borodin’s opera Prince Igor. Composed around 1875, this “exotic” balletic scene from the second act features beautiful, flowing melodies from the captive Polovtsian women as they perform for their captors.
The opera is based on a 12th-century conflict between the Russian Prince Igor and the Polovtsy people, a nomadic Tartar tribe.
Though the opera was never completed by Borodin, the Polovtsian Dances are his work and remain a beloved concert piece, often performed without the choral parts.
