José Bragato (born Giuseppe Bragato, Udine, October 1th, 1915 – Buenos Aires, July 18th, 2017) was an Italian-Argentine cellist, conductor, and composer.
Together with Astor Piazzolla, he founded the Tango Vanguard in 1955 and supported Piazzolla in the creation of the Buenos Aires Octet, along with other great musicians, producing the great “tango revolution” in Buenos Aires. In 1976, he was a soloist with the Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra, Brazil, and in 1978, he founded the chamber ensembles of the University of Natal, Brazil.
He returned to Argentina in 1982 and refounded the SADAIC Archive of Popular and Classical Music. He received the SADAIC Lifetime Achievement Award and was also recognized for his career by the Autonomous Government of the City of Buenos Aires. He is also a co-winner of the 2002 Latin Grammy Award in the Tango category for his work as arranger of the CD Adiós Nonino released by the Amazonia Quartet of Brazil.
His music for solo cello and orchestra, as well as for classical duos and trios, such as Graciela and Buenos Aires, Milontán, and Malambo, are part of the repertoire of famous European and North American chamber ensembles.
