BRUCKNER – Motet ‘Ecce Sacerdos’ (1885) – 8 CELLOS

Other Identification:
“Ecce Sacerdos Magnus” is a sacred motet composed by Anton Bruckner in 1885 for the 100th anniversary of the Linz diocese. It translates to “Behold a great priest, who in his days pleased God” and is scored for an eight-part choir, three trombones, and organ. The piece is known for its dramatic contrasts, powerful harmonic shifts, and opulent scoring, reflecting the expressive power found in Bruckner’s symphonic works.

However, the motet was first premiered much later, in 1912 (the original manuscript was archived and later edited by Viktor Keldorfer).
Movements or sections:
It features a rondo-like structure, which includes hints of reformist practices, such as the ‘Gloria Patri’ section starting with a Gregorian chant fragment sung in a rhythmically fixed form.
Instrumentation: OCTET OF CELLOS
Seated as two quartets; Choir ‘A’ (Cellos 1 to 4), and Choir ‘B’ (Cellos 5 to 8).
The base version is taken from a previous arrangement for Trombone Octet.
