BRUCKNER Motet ‘Monte Oliveti’ (c.1848) – FOUR CELLOS (easy)

Other Identification:
Anton Bruckner’s motet “In Monte Oliveti” is a piece for mixed a cappella choir, based on the text from the Gospel of Matthew about Jesus’ prayer on the Mount of Olives. It was composed around 1848, originally for Holy Thursday at St. Florian Monastery, although a version for soloist and organ also exists.
Movements or sections:
The lyrics come from the Gospel of Matthew, which includes Jesus’ prayer: “Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. Your will be done.” In the religious context the piece is inspired by Jesus’ moment of agony before his crucifixion.
