CHOPIN-JOHNSTONE – Prelude Op.28 No.4 – 5 CELLOS

Other Identification:
This piece is surely one of the most famous preludes by Chopin, and although it is one of his easier pieces it is one that contains at the same time some of the deepest and most sincere lines of the composer. It is long famed for being one of the most melancholic preludes of all piano literature, and this haunting melody was played, by Chopin’s own request, at his own funeral.

The abounding lyricism is almost constantly accompanied by a piano left-hand of gently moving three notes chords, therefore making this in theory an easy four-part arrangement. However David Johnstone has gone one step further; he has enriched the creation even more by adding a second melodic line (hence the title ‘Chopin/Johnstone’), making this a romantic love duet for the first two cellists. In all, a most juicy small miniature for cello quintet!
