CUI – Orientale, Op.50 No.9 (from ‘Kaleidoscope) – FOUR CELLOS

Other Identification:
“Orientale,” Op. 50, No. 9 is a popular intermediate instrumental piece by the Russian composer César Cui, known for its short, mood-capturing character, similar to a Chopin Mazurka or Tchaikovsky’s March Slav. While many of Cui’s large-scale compositions are less performed, “Orientale” remains a favorite for exams and performances, often found in arrangements for solo violin, string quartets, and other ensembles.
Movements or sections:
The tempo indication is – Allegretto
Instrumentation:
QUARTET OF FOUR CELLOS
Also, in theory, performance is possible by larger cello ensembles.
Arranged by David Johnstone

1 PDF, containing all four individual cello parts and the violin-piano duo as a base score
Approximate difficulty:
MEDIUM.
No score – a ‘chamber music’ version, but Cello I generally leads. An interesting an unusual piece, with effective triple-stopping pizzicatos and arco jete (‘thrown’ bow)! Both performance possibilities – quartet (intimate) or larger ensemble (extrivert) – offer different interpretations to work on.
