DEBUSSY – Goliwogg’s Cakewalk – FOUR CELLOS

Other Identification:
“Golliwogg’s Cakewalk” is the final piece from Claude Debussy’s 1908 piano suite, Children’s Corner, dedicated to his daughter Emma. Inspired by an English character in Florence Upton’s books and the American cakewalk dance, the piece is a playful ragtime work that incorporates a humorous parody of Richard Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde”. The suite’s title and individual movement names are in English, as a nod to Emma’s English governess.

While Debussy intended the piece to be humorous and playful, reflecting his daughter’s favorite doll, the work’s racial origins have made it a subject of debate for modern audiences and performers.
