“Going Home” is an instrumental track by Mark Knopfler from the 1983 film Local Hero (starring Burt Lancaster and directed by Bill Forsyth). This was also his debut solo single.

It is famous for being the anthem for Newcastle United F.C., played before home games, and it was re-recorded in 2024 by a supergroup of legendary guitarists, Mark Knopfler’s Guitar Heroes, to raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust.

The original version specially features Knopfler on guitar and Michael Brecker on saxophone. However, the single initially had modest chart success, doing rather better in the Netherlands and in New Zealand, than in the UK. However, its popularity has grown and grown, now being instantly recognizable across the world!

Personal

David Johnstone lives near Pamplona (Navarre, Spain) with his wife Rosa and their two “Spanglish” children, close to the Atlantic Pyrenees. The nearest international airport is Bilbao.

He is interested in world affairs, politics, animal rights, and most sports (including being a lifelong suffering Reading FC fan!). Also passionate about Celtic culture and genealogy, he has traced his ‘English’ family back to 1280, although Scotland and Ireland have also shaped his background. And yes — he is half-ashamed to admit it, he loves silly jokes!

Social Work

David Johnstone supports animal rights, he is against any form of abuse towards them, and says a loud “NO” to bullfighting, foxhunting and any other animal cruelty.
