DUNHILL, Thomas F. – A Pastoral Trio, in Eb Major, Op.101/3 (1946), for CELLO TRIO

Other Identification: This present work is the third piece of four comprising the composer’s Opus 101 – almost surely his last piece, dating from 1946 which was the last year of his fully creative life. It exudes a solid maturity of writing with influences showing from the romantic English organ school, and also from Cesar Franck and almost to the French impressionists. 2 PDFs: PDF 1 – General Score PDF 2 – Individual Parts
Movements or sections: Piece titled ‘Moderato’
Instrumentation: Three Cellos
Approximate difficulty: David Johnstone has arranged this music for THREE cellos. As delightful chamber music all the parts play a vital role; indeed, a falling phrase of melody the double bass brings the work to a close. The cello parts are written in comfortable registers; thumb position is not necessary, although the key of Eb Major means for regular extensions in the early positions.
