DVORAK – Melodic Movement ‘Largo’ (from the ‘New World’ Symphony) – 5 CELLOS OR CELLO ORCHESTRA

Other Identification:
The “Largo” is the second movement of Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World.” Composed in New York in 1893, whilst Dvořák was the director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York, the symphony is a blend of Bohemian nationalism and American folk influences, also including African-American spirituals and Native American melodies, which Dvořák admired. The Largo is a slow, dignified movement known for its famous, mournful cor anglais solo, which has been adapted into the song “Goin’ Home”.

The symphony premiered on December 15th, 1893, in New York City to a sold-out and enthusiastic audience – and Victor Herbert was the principal cellist in the orchestra upon Dvorak’s insistence!
Movements or sections:
marked Largo
The cello version of the second movement is not a transcription as such of the movement, but a creation or a melodic movement based on the principal theme. It is developed in several verses by different colourings and part-writing that make this a good concert piece for cello ensembles, or indeed by full cello orchestra.
Instrumentation:
QUINTET OF FIVE CELLOS
or
ORCHESTRA OF CELLOS
Prepared by David Johnstone
