ELGAR – Nimrod (from the ‘Enigma Variations, Op.36) – 8 CELLOS

Other Identification:
“Nimrod” is the ninth variation of Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations, an orchestral work depicting his friends and family composed between 1898 and 1899.

The name is a pun. Nimrod was a biblical “mighty hunter,” and Jaeger was Elgar’s German-born editor and publisher, and a steadfast supporter of his music.

The piece is especially known for its ability to evoke deep emotions, and it is often played at funerals, memorial services and solemn occasions in general. It is a common request at such events in the UK, and is often performed on Remembrance Sunday at the Cenotaph in London. Other appearances include at the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, and at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
