ENGLAND – Old English – Sumer is Icumen In – FOUR CELLOS (easier)

Other Identification:
“Sumer Is Icumen In,” or “Summer Has Come In,” is a medieval English round from the mid-13th century, known as the “Cuckoo Song”. Written in the Wessex dialect of Middle English, it celebrates the arrival of summer and the flourishing of nature, with lyrics describing blooming meadows, bleating lambs, and lowing calves. It is the earliest known example of a six-part polyphonic composition, a musical style featuring multiple independent melodic lines, and the composer’s identity remains unknown.
The song is found in the Harley 978 manuscript, which was copied around 1261-1264, and found in Reading Abbey.
