ERTEGUN_Ray Charles – Virtuoso Jazz Piece based on ‘Mess Around’ – 8 CELLOS

Other Identification:
“Mess Around” is a 1953 R&B hit for Ray Charles, written by the Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun under the pseudonym A. Nugetre. It was inspired by boogie-woogie piano, with the intro paying tribute to artists like Pete Johnson.

The song was a spontaneous studio decision to help a hesitant Charles loosen up, and yet it became a major success, reaching number two on the charts and marking the beginning of many hits for him on the same Atlantic label.

Anecdote: Ertegun often used the name A. Nugetre (Ertegun spelled backwards!).
Movements or sections: marked ‘Driving Boogie Woogie’ (Quarter note = 138)

OCTET OF EIGHT CELLOS
