ESLAVA, Hilarion – Pastorale – FOUR CELLOS

Hilarion Eslava, of Navarrese origin, was a key figure in Spanish religious music. As a child, Eslava joined the Pamplona Cathedral choir, where he studied piano, organ, violin, and composition. He later became Chapel Master at Burgo de Osma and the Royal Chapel of Madrid.
He is considered one of the most important composers of 19th-century Spanish music, and his work was fundamental to the reform of religious music. He composed religious music, operatic works, and treatises on music. His work also influenced the development of the Spanish operatic genre.
He was a music theorist and editor, with a special interest in the reform of religious music, a movement known as Cecilianism.
