FAURE – Cantique de Jean Racine, Op. 11 (1865) – 8 CELLOS

Other Identification:
Cantique de Jean Racine, Op. 11 is an 1865 sacred choral work by Gabriel Fauré, originally written for a composition competition at the École Niedermeyer in Paris, where it won first prize. The lyrics are a French paraphrase of a Latin hymn by Jean Racine (and attributed to St. Ambrose), a 17th-century poet and dramatist. The piece is known for its lyrical, romantic style, and a rich harmonic language that foreshadows Fauré’s later Requiem.

The original scoring was for Mixed chorus and organ. However, it was susequently expanded to include an orchestral version, It was yet later transcribed for other combinations, including for only upper voices (SSAA) and arrangements for smaller ensembles. Today it is a beloved part of the choral and instrumental repertoire, performed in both sacred and secular settings.
