FAURE – Elegy, Op.24 – 6 CELLOS (SOLOIST and QUINTET, or accompanied by Cello Orchestra)

Other Identification:
Gabriel Fauré’s Élégie, Op. 24, is a melancholic and expressive piece written for cello and piano in 1880 and later orchestrated. Intended as the slow movement for a cello sonata, the project was abandoned, and the piece was published and performed in 1883. The work features a somber opening, an intense central section, and a return to the elegiac mood, capturing deep emotion through its lyrical melody and changing textures.
Movements or sections:
Cast in C minor, the piece moves from a simple, sweeping melody, passing a more fleeting section towards a more complex, stormy central section before returning to the initial theme.
Instrumentation:
SEXTET OF SIX CELLOS – CELLO SOLOIST AND CELLO QUINTET
CELLO SOLOIST ACCOMPANIED BY AN ORCHESTRA OF CELLOS
