Papillon, Op. 77, is a popular, short piece for cello and piano by French composer Gabriel Fauré. Composed around 1884, it was published in 1898, initially with the title Morceau pour le violoncelle et le piano, before Fauré’s publisher successfully insisted on the name “Papillon” (French for “butterfly”, and in Spanish titled ‘Mariposa’). The work is known for its quick, energetic, and virtuosic passages, making it a beloved concert piece for cellists that showcases the instrument’s agility.
