FAURE – Pie Jesu (from The Requiem) – FOUR CELLOS

Other Identification:
“Pie Jesu” is a famous aria for solo soprano from Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, Op. 48, composed around 1887, likely after his father’s death and shortly before his mother’s. The piece’s text, meaning “Pious Jesus,” is a section from the hymn “Dies irae,” but Fauré replaces the traditional “Day of Wrath” movement with this plea for mercy. The music is known for its peaceful, atmospheric, and sublime beauty, emphasizing a human feeling of faith in eternal rest rather than judgment, and was performed at Fauré’s own funeral.
