FAURE – Sicilienne, Op.78 – 5 CELLOS

Other Identification:
Gabriel Fauré’s Sicilienne, Op. 78, is a popular and graceful piece that originated as an orchestral work in 1893 for a play that was never staged. The story is that it was part of the incidental music for a production of Molière’s play ‘Le Bourgeois gentilhomme’, but the theatre company went bankrupt before it could be premiered!

In 1898, Fauré arranged the unperformed music for cello and piano, giving it the opus number 78. However, it was also incorporated into his incidental music for the play ‘Pelléas et Mélisande’.

This melody – in whatever version it is heard – is one of Fauré’s most famous and frequently performed works.
Movements or sections:
The Sicilienne is a baroque dance, typically in a slow 6/8 or 12/8 meter. Slightly more than a miniature, this piece is known for its delicate, flowing melody, gentle melancholy, and swaying accompaniment.

Dedicatee of this presentation (if applicable):
Faure’s creation for cello and piano was written for the then orchestral principal cellist, William Henry Squire, whose playing Fauré revered when they worked together at the Covent Garden Opera Orchestra!

David Johnstone’s arrangement is dedicated to the Argentine-Spanish cellist Rodolfo Zanni
