FEBLAND – The Acceleration Polka (a small concert piece, in the form of a ‘Tempo Control’ Velocity Etude) – FOUR CELLOS or CELLO ORCHESTRA

Other Identification:
Originally composed for piano, this most original piece is wonderful music to develop a sense of rhythmic control in acceleration. Starting in a comfortable 2 in a bar at metronome 104 for the first few bars, the speed then increases during 28 bars, arriving at a maximum speed of metronome 152. There then follows, without a break, a more hymn-like section which is constant at a ‘half-way house’ with the metronome at 120.

The process is then repeated, without the initial bars, and second time the hymn-like section comes to a gentle rest.

About the composer:
Jonathan FeBland (b.1960) trained at the Royal Academy of Music, London (1978-82). His work has been published and is in print with Universal Edition since 1986. He has written extensively for Solo Piano and has had seven major works premièred by Louis Demetrius Alvanis. The CD ‘Piano Colours’ (Alvanis plays FeBland on the Meridian label) was released in the UK and is available on Amazon and iTunes. B3 Classic, a trio consisting of Clarinet, Cello & Piano featured FeBland’s English Suite on a Warner Brothers CD ‘Chamber Music Discoveries’ that was launched at the prestigious Conde du Duque Hall in the Plaza de España, Madrid in December, 2007; the CD reached the top ten several times in the Spanish iTunes Classical Chart in 2008. The composer passed away in 2017.
Movements or sections:
True to its title, this piece has much variable tempi!
The fun lies in all cellists being able to increase speed “AT THE SAME TIME”! The increase is gradual, although to help a little, the arrows marked → should show instant greater tempo energy!
Instrumentation:
QUARTET OF FOUR CELLOS
or
CELLO ORCHESTRA / LARGER CELLO ENSEMBLE
Arranged by David Johnstone

2 PDFs, one of the score, and the other with all induividual parts.
Approximate difficulty: EASY to MEDIUM
It is hoped that this might be a useful ‘chamber’ piece in conservatoires, music schools. It is highly playable for lower intermediate level students, and no thumb position is used.
Dedicatee of this presentation (if applicable):
Affectionately dedicated to the Spanish cellist Soledad Arroyo Mayo
