Giovanni Gabrieli’s Sonata pian’ e forte (1597) is an early instrumental composition that specified both the instruments and the dynamics of “soft” and “loud.” It is an example of the polychoral style, which uses two instrumental choirs of four instruments each, located in different parts of the church, to create a call-and-response effect.
