GARCIA-LORCA – Zorongo Gitano – FOUR CELLOS

Other Identification:
Federico García Lorca (1898–1936) was a renowned Spanish poet, playwright, and theater director, considered one of Spain’s greatest literary figures and a key member of the Generation of ’27. His works, known for their fusion of folk traditions, Andalusian culture, and avant-garde style, explore themes of passion, social constraint, and identity. He achieved fame with The Gypsy Ballads (1928) and wrote dramatic masterpieces like Blood Wedding and The House of Bernarda Alba. Lorca’s life ended tragically when he was executed by fascist forces at the start of the Spanish Civil War in 1936.
Movements or sections:
“Zorongo Gitano” refers to the recording of a traditional Andalusian song and dance, “Zorongo,” by Federico García Lorca and La Argentinita in 1931, a performance which featured Lorca on piano and La Argentinita singing. While not strictly a flamenco style, it incorporates elements of flamenco and is part of the broader Andalusian musical tradition. The song “Zorongo” itself is a popular dance and singing style that likely derives from older forms like the zarabanda and zarandillo, and has historical ties to zambra groups in Granada.
