GERSHWIN – Summertime (from the opera ‘Porgy and Bess’)- SIX CELLOS

Other Identification:
“Summertime” (composed sometime between 1933 and 1934) is a famous aria from George Gershwin’s 1935 opera ‘Porgy and Bess’, with lyrics by DuBose Heyward and Ira Gershwin. The song is a haunting, blues-infused lullaby, inspired by African-American spirituals, sung initially by the character Clara and later by Bess.

It has since become one of the most frequently covered songs in American history, crossing genres from jazz and pop to rock, and is now considered a staple of the Great American Songbook.

Over the years, “Summertime” has been covered by thousands of artists in numerous genres, including rock and roll (Janis Joplin, Paul McCartney, Billy Stewart) and disco.
