GLUCK – Andante – CELLO AND PIANO

Other Identification:
One of the great masters of eighteenth century opera, Gluck is known for his elegant synthesis of the French and Italian operatic traditions, exemplified by such remarkable works as Orfeo ed Euridice and Alceste.
This present melody was found by Johnstone in an arrangement for violin and piano, and he unashamedly put it one octave lower for violoncello! In this way it is excellent for the intermediate cellist – first position to 7th position are called for, and in many combinations, but there is no thumb position present. It also gives the chance to develop an expressive vibrato.
