GORRITI – Andantino Religioso – 5 CELLOS

Other Identification:
Felipe Gorriti y Osambela was the son of the organist of Uharte Arakil (Navarre), where he was born in 1839. In 1858, he won first prize for composition at the Royal Conservatory of Madrid. A year later, he began working as a choirmaster and organist at the church of Santa María de Tafalla (Navarre). He later moved to Tolosa (Basque country), where he also worked as choirmaster.

Gorriti’s music was recognized nationally and internationally in his time, and currently continues enjoy prestige among performers, especially amongst choir directors and their members, and by organists. A study of his compositions reveals an interesting period in Spanish religious music, where the influence of the Italian operatic style (especially Bellini), Central European Romanticism, the French organ school, the influence of folk music, and the reform of religious music converge.
