HANDEL – Arrival of Queen of Sheba (from the oratorio ‘Solomon’, 1749) – SOLO CELLO AND PIANO

Other Identification:
“The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba” is a famous, lively instrumental piece by George Frideric Handel, originally the Sinfonia that opens Act III of his 1749 oratorio ‘Solomon’, premiered at Covent Garden Theatre in London. It depicts the bustling preparations for the Queen of Sheba’s visit to King Solomon and is now often performed as a standalone concert piece, sometimes called “The Entrance of the Queen of Sheba”. The music is characterized by its bright, sprightly sound and prominent oboe solos (transferred to the solo cellists).
Movements or sections:
Handel did not use the modern title; the program simply called it “Sinfony”. It is one of Handel’s most famous and frequently performed works. It is often played separately from the full oratorio, being a popular piece for weddings and other festive occasions. It was also performed at the opening ceremonies of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
It is marked simply ‘Allegro’
Instrumentation: TWO SOLO CELLOS AND PIANO
