HANDEL – Benedicat Vobis – FOUR CELLOS

Other Identification:
To be truthful it seems that this piece was not by Handel! What appears to have happened is that it was ‘inspired’ by the choral movement ‘Lift up your heads’ from the Messiah by the great German (or Anglo- German) composer, but was in fact composed by Lowell Mason, who lived from 1792 to 1872. The confusion arises because in the original score the composer put ‘From Handel’ (as if divinely passed to him) – in time the word ‘from’ because gradually eliminated!

Whether you put the name Handel or Mason (or both) the fact remains that not only is it gloriously sung by choirs to this day, but also makes an arousing short miniature for cello quartet or an orchestra of cellos.
Instrumentation:
QUARTET OF FOUR CELLOS
Arranged by David Johnstone
