HANDEL – Hornpipe (from ‘The Water Music’) – FOUR CELLOS

Other Identification:
Written for King George I of Great Britain in 1717 and first performed by 50 musicians on a barge in the River Thames, Handel’s Water Music is a collection of three suites that exemplify Baroque orchestration (except for the harpsichord and timpani, for which the transport on and off the barge would have been difficult). George I reportedly loved the whole work from the outset – in fact, on the day of the premiere the musicians played the entire work three times before the river cruise ended.

Handel’s reputation, both with the royal family and the more general public, was well increased by his contribution to the “royal cruise.” It should be said that the Hornpipe was one of the most dearly loved pieces of all, and is often played separately. Indeed, movements from the so-called Water Music appeared in various publications for many decades, and concert performances were very popular, cementing for posterity the fame of this Hornpipe.
Instrumentation:
Throughout the piece the wind and brass instruments, so well suited for outdoor use, figure prominently, but given a good full sounding and energetic bow string stroke this can work amazingly well on a quartet of cellos!
