HARTOG – Un Petit Rien (1886) – THREE CELLOS

Other Identification:
Henri Hartog was a Durch composer who lived from 1869 to 1904, and probably such a short life span is the main reason he is not better known. However, his family lived in certain poverty too, which limited his early formation. This lovely piece was originally composed for piano solo, and was first published in 1886 when the composer was just 17 years old!
Movements or sections:
marked ‘Allegro moderato’
It is in ternary form – the outer sections display a charm and innocence which will gain from using a light spiccato stroke that hardly leaves the strings, whilst the central part is much more lyrical and openly romantic. The original version ends ‘pp’; however I believe that in cello ensembles a noble ‘f’ ending is more effective – your choice!
Instrumentation:
THREE OF THREE CELLOS OR LARGER CELLO ENSEMBLE
This piece can be performed with three solo cellists, or by a larger cello ensemble. When they are more than one cellists per part, try to play ‘divisi’ when possible!
