HAYDN – Song ‘Die Harmonie in der Ehe’ (The Harmony in Marriage) – FOUR CELLOS

Other Identification:
‘Die Harmonie in der Ehe’ (‘The Harmony in Marriage’) is a one movement secular part-song, sung a capella. Its popularity was almost immediate; first published: 1796 in ‘Aus des Ramlers Lyrischer Blumenlese’, and was rekindled in 1915 in ‘Volksliederbuch für gemischten Chor’. It is based on a text in German (Deutsch) by Johann Nikolaus Götz (1721 – 1781), “Die Harmonie in der Ehe”.
Movements or sections:
Originally set in Bb Major it is marked Allegretto, and indeed, it should above all sound ‘lively’.
David Johnstone transcribes the piece into Eb Major, otherwise makes very few changes to the original. There is no general score offered, but sufficient rehearsal letters are shown.
Instrumentation:
QUARTET OF FOUR CELLOS
Arranged by David Johnstone
