HOLST – Mars (from the Orchestral Suite ‘The Planets’) – 6 CELLOS or CELLO ORCHESTRA

Other Identification:
“Mars, the Bringer of War” is the first movement of Gustav Holst’s orchestral suite, The Planets, and is characterized by its powerful and aggressive tone. Composed before World War I, its insistent, repeating 5/4 rhythm and use of brass and percussion create a feeling of war and mechanical conflict. The piece builds to brutal climaxes, using an unsettling and threatening musical language to depict the planet Mars as a force of war. Holst finished “Mars” in 1914, just before the outbreak of World War I, though he had no specific knowledge of mechanized warfare at the time.
