Lyra Davidica is a collection of hymns published in 1708, best known for including the first English translation of the 14th-century Latin hymn “Surrexit Christus hodie”. The collection, whose full title is Lyra Davidica, or a Collection of Divine Songs and Hymns, was compiled by John Walsh and features hymns translated from German and Latin, set to simple tunes.
Movements or sections:
The translated Easter hymn, “Jesus Christ is risen today,” along with the associated tune, is famously featured in the collection and is the basis for the more modern hymn “Christ the Lord Is Risen Today” by Charles Wesley.
