JOHNSTONE – Ballade – CELLO AND PIANO

Other Identification:
The opening seven bars are an accompanying figure which Johnstone had included a while previously in a short film. Using this as a kind of harmonic blanket, he composed very cantabile melodies on top; a somewhat romantic idealism present but with a poignant feeling.
Movements or sections:
marked ‘Moderato’
Instrumentation:
DUO CELLO AND PIANO
….
2 PDFs, one for each instrument
Approximate difficulty:
MEDIUM
It is not especially difficult for the cellist, but the whole playing register of the cello is used (registers of 2 octaves on the top A string). It will need at least an intermediate cellist to coax out the best of the expression. The piano part is somewhat simpler, but needs full care to support the cellist.
