JOHNSTONE – Concert Piece ‘Suarez Sonorities’ – 8 CELLOS, 8 BASSOONS, or 8 TROMBONES

Other Identification:
This piece started life with the hope of my creating a short miniature for a friend, but as inspiration grew this composition has finally become almost a brief:
** Upper String Sinfonia (in the version for Six Violins and Two Violas or Upper String Orchestra)
** Cello Sinfonia (in the alternative scoring for Eight Cellos)

The aim has been to try to produce a symphonic piece which is neither specifically ‘classical’ nor ‘pop’, with prominent melodic and rhythmic material for all eight voices, but yet relatively comfortably playable by students and adult amateurs (of course, that is not to say that the work wouldn’t benefit from professional performer care!). So, the left-hand positions in either version are only of moderate difficulty. The musical content may well test ensembles, but the good news is that it will seem to be a more difficult work to the listening public than it really is!
Movements or sections:
A substantial one movement piece, marked ‘Very lively’ (Quarter note = 130)
Duration: nearly 5 minutes
Instrumentation:
OCTET OF EIGHT CELLOS
or
OCTET OF EIGHT BASSOONS
or OCTET OF EIGHT TROMBONES

Downloads of 2 PDFs:
[1 – General Score
[2 – All individual parts
Approximate difficulty:
Medium (almost easy-ish)
The only complication might be the rapid speed – the notes are quite easy!
Dedicatee of this presentation (if applicable):
Raquel Suarez, Spanish violinist
