Structure: in one giant movement in Sonata form, with three different subject groups, and an extended episode appearing after the first development section serving as a slow movement, which then leads to the second development section and posterior recapitulation, rounded off by a small coda. The work is performed without a break…
Duration: approx. 26 to 28 minutes
Instrumentation:
SOLOIST DOUBLE BASS AND CHAMBER ORCHESTRA
Scoring: Double bass soloist, violins I, violins II, violas, cellos, double basses, 1 flute, 1 oboe, 1 clarinet (both Bb and A), 1 bassoon, and 1 french horn.
Sensible MINIMUM orchestral size of the string sections: 7 Violin I, 6 Violin II, 4 Viola, 4 cello and 2 double bass. But if more players are available in an orchestra they should be included!
