JOHNSTONE – English Serious Frolic – STRING QUARTET

Other Identification: This music is just one part of the large series ‘European Romantic Pieces’ for String Quartet, some 9 works, and lasting some 45 minutes. The motivation for these compositions by David Johnstone is to unite old and new Europe in a ‘Journey Through Europe in Quartet’.
‘English Serious Frolic’ is a seemingly light piece, but it also conceals a romantic seriousness reminiscent of and honours Edward Elgar, while also revealing the musical humour of David Johnstone. It is short and compact, with a precise pulsation in the relaxation or push of the beat (‘rubato’), and the overall writing suggests an orchestral atmosphere or background sound within chamber music.
