JOHNSTONE – Nuevo Navartango – TWO ACORDIONS

Other Identification:
‘Nuevo Navartango’ is a little play on words; it is in English the ‘New Navarre Tango’ for two accordions. It is based on Johnstone’s previous ‘Navartango’ but hereby revised and extended. True to the Piazzolla formula (which also might have its roots in ‘sonata form’!) there are two main blocks of motives. The first is very rhythmic and energetic, whilst the second is substantially slower, giving ample opportunity for expressive lyricism and even pathos.
When these two blocks are repeated it might seem structured in a simple A-B-A-B; however in the second ‘B’ section the music suddenly and unexpectedly takes us off into new directions and into a highly charged development section, before finally resting once again in the more tranquil ‘B’ section to close the composition.
Duration: about 8 minutes
Instrumentation:
DUO OF TWO ACCORDIONS

1 PDF, as a ‘playing score’
Approximate difficulty:
Both accordion parts are of equal importance, and of equal difficulty (medium-to-advanced levels). On top of that they are very inter-woven between each other, making this a great choice for advanced level students in chamber music.
Dedicatee of this presentation (if applicable):
The music is dedicated to Nekane Iturrioz, Javier López Jaso, and indeed to all the accordionists of Navarre!
